Tabla Legend Zakir Hussain in Critical Condition, Family Urges Prayers Amid Death Rumors
Renowned tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain is in critical condition and receiving treatment in a hospital in San Francisco, his family confirmed on Sunday. The multiple Grammy Award-winning artist is battling serious heart-related issues, according to his manager, Nirmala Bachani. Hussain has been hospitalized for the past two weeks.
In a statement to the media, his sister, Khurshid Aulia, appealed to fans around the world to keep her brother in their prayers, emphasizing that the legendary musician remains alive despite rumors circulating about his death. "My brother is deeply ill at this time. We are asking for all his fans in India and across the world to pray for his recovery. But as one of India’s greatest exports, please don't assume that his story has ended," she said, addressing reports that had prematurely declared his passing.
Khurshid Aulia further urged the media to refrain from spreading false information, clarifying, "He is very much alive. He is critically ill and still with us. Please do not circulate rumors of his death. It is very painful to see such misinformation, especially on social media."
Prominent flautist and close friend of Hussain, Rakesh Chaurasia, also shared his concern, stating, "He is unwell and currently in the ICU. We are all extremely worried about his condition."
Amidst growing concern, several prominent public figures, including Union Ministers and Chief Ministers, shared messages of support and tributes to the tabla maestro, unaware that reports of his death were premature. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting also posted a tribute on social media, which was later deleted after the confusion was clarified.
Zakir Hussain, 72, is considered one of the greatest tabla players in the world, known for his mastery of rhythm and innovation in Indian classical music. His family has requested privacy and continued prayers during this difficult time.
